Chanchay Hua Hin:
Handy beach access at affordable prices

F. Stephen Thompson

chanchay_02.jpgLocated just a matter of minutes from Hua Hin's main beach area, Chanchay Bungalow and Hotel offers holidaymakers or locals an almost unparalleled value-for-money accommodation option.

Room rates start at 1,200 baht (US$36) per night for a basic twin or double room, rising to 1,330 baht if you're in need of a bit more space. Prices include a buffet breakfast, which is fairly limited yet adequate, while I have personally found this operator and the staff to be be very 'family friendly'.

So what's the catch? Well, I've been asking myself the same question for the past 10 years, so I guess that means there isn't one. Chanchay does get extremely busy during Thai public holidays and rates rise slightly (by 100-200 baht) under such circumstances. It would also pay to book ahead if you wish to stay during the weekend, although you'll almost certainly be able to just “show up” on a weekday.

Comfort and cleanliness '++'
For those visitors to Hua Hin who wish to spend most of their visit on or near the beach (or pool), and I include myself in this category, Chanchay is an ideal spot. It's a five-minute walk to the beach, while the property itself boasts a (small) pool. The pool is fairly small, so it's probably best suited to children.

There's also a restaurant, but in all honesty, when it comes to food and beverage (F&B), the resort's fare is pretty basic. Given the wealth of dining options located nearby, I personally don't consider this to be a major problem. If you happen to be seeking 'fine' dining, you can always book at table at the nearby Hua Hin Marriot and Spa or Royal Garden Resort. Chanchay is a 5-minute walk from these two properties.

All the rooms I've stayed in over the years have been of a reasonable standard, are comfortable, and are always kept clean. Each room has a small television and mini bar.

The hotel's staff are always seem to be pleasant and courteous, while noise levels are reasonable. There is plenty of off-street parking, although it's possible to 'survive' here without the use of a car unless you are looking to do some major sightseeing. There are no taxis in Hua Hin, so a hire car might be the best option in such a scenario, although there are plenty of songthaews and motorcycles around for those who don't mind roughing it.

One final point worth mentioning - if traveling by bus from Bangkok, it's possible to ask the driver to drop you near the resort since it passes close by.
