Grand Millennium: More options for trendy leisure crowd

grandmillennium_01.jpgYoung leisure travelers, as well as business travelers, have more and more choices on offer when seeking stylish, reasonably-priced hotels in Bangkok. These luxury class hotels, which don’t include many of the stiff rules and outrageously marked-up prices imposed by their rivals, leave guests feeling comfortable and at ease, allowing them to relax, stay healthy, and enjoy the range of cuisines and amenities on offer. One of the latest additions to this “fashionable” form of luxury hotel is the Grand Millennium Sukhumvit.

A tight little package
Located just off Sukhumvit 21 near the Asok BTS skytrain station and Sukhumvit MRT subway station, the hotel has a city-cool slender shape, rising up 24 floors in the heart of Sukhumvit. But its slender shape can be deceiving. The hotel’s intelligent design has allowed it many, often unique, features. In addition to 325 guest rooms, there are two ballrooms; nine meeting rooms; a business center; a swimming pool; a spa and fitness center; a library-conservatory (ladies only); an executive club lounge; six F&B outlets; and even a mini-golf course.

Grand Millennium Sukhumvit’s compact lobby is flanked by a coffee shop and a jazz bar. Flourworx features illy coffee, excellent desserts (the cheesecake is highly recommended) and moderately priced lunch sets, including a combination sandwich and soup for 180++ baht (US$5.60).

InBlu, the jazz bar, features light blue-hued lighting and decor, funky cocktails, and nightly live jazz jams. This means that when arriving with a buzz in the evening, you’ll be greeted with cool tunes to top the night off.

Doin’ it with style
Adding to the ‘stylish motif’ is the choice of background music throughout the hotel. For the first time in my life, I actually wanted to remain in the elevator to enjoy the sounds.

The tunes change from floor to floor depending on the setting. For example, if you get off at the floor where the restaurants are located, you’ll be greeted with deep house or mellow breaks, while on the fitness floor, you’ll get a taste of more upbeat disco house. Guest floors feature equally stylish music.

Bathrooms feature a ‘sexy’ optional see-through function, allowing whoever is in the bath tub to see through to the bedroom – and vice versa. This also means the bather can still have a great view of the Bangkok skyline, which is a common feature in all guest rooms.

The housekeeping crew also pays great attention to details. One such feature, which will likely remain in my mind when staying at hotels for many years to come, is the cutely-shaped towels. The housekeeping team manages to craft guest room towels into animal shapes, such as elephants or dogs, or fold them into handy items, such as small pouches that guests can store toiletries in.

Don’t ‘fusion’ my food
An intriguing dining spot at the hotel is the Japanese and Italian restaurant Terra Roku. Rather than being a Japanese-Italian (Japitalian?) ‘fusion’ restaurant, it offers two distinct “menus within a [single] menu”.

You can choose to dine indoors or al fresco, while the restaurant boasts two private rooms with excellent views of Asok.

The menu has a wide range of food items and prices. A few items off the Japanese menu include sashimi (5 pieces, ranging from 170 – 1,600 baht, depending on your selection); avocado salad (260 baht); Asahi draft beer (200 baht); and barley shochu (260 baht/glass). A few items on the Italian side are Spaghetti al Nero (290 baht) and red wine (260-400 baht/glass).

Other restaurants include Tapas y Vino, a contemporary Tapas bar; Atelier, featuring authentic Thai cuisine; and mit (Made in Thailand), which specializes in noodle dishes.

This one’s for the ladies

One last unique feature at the Grand Millennium Sukhumvit is its ladies-only floor. These are quite common in Japan, but we’ll have to wait and see whether or not the concept takes off in the kingdom.

This floor features a spacious library and conservatory, where ladies can unwind and chill-out without being harassed by members of the opposite sex. Does this mean we’ll also see male-only floors in the near future? If testosterone-fueled fantasies of heterosexual males remain on the same continuum as they have since the beginning of time, I highly doubt it.
