A stay at Chakrabongse Villas offers guests an intriguing insight into the early part of the Rattanakosin Era (1782-present), the luxury riverside retreat providing the perfect base from which to explore cultural and historic attractions alongside the Chao Phraya River.

Built in 1908 by HRH Prince Chakrabongse, Chakrabongse House was used by the prince when he attended Royal ceremonies at the Grand Palace and when traveling by boat on excursions along the capital’s primary waterway.

Following Thailand’s transformation in 1932 from an absolute to a constitutional monarchy, the historian and writer HRH Prince Chula Chakrabongse resided in Chakrabongse House, followed by the current owner MR Narisara Chakrabongse, a great granddaughter of King Chulalongkorn the Great (King Rama V).

Chakrabongsee Villas provides a wonderful combination of elegance and comfort with plenty of accessibility to nearby attractions in the Tha Tien area, such as the Grand Palace and the temple of Wat Phra Kaeo (‘Temple of the Emerald Buddha’), while boasting easy access to boat services operating along the Chao Phraya.

A truly romantic setting
The property has three pavilions featuring typical Thai characteristics, along with a Chinese suite. The Riverview Suite is a teak pavilion located alongside the river, which also has its own veranda, providing an idea spot for a romantic, candlelit dinner. The veranda connects to a terrace, which has a superb view of Wat Arun ('the Temple of Dawn').

The riverside pavilion features a large bedroom, which is large enough to comfortably accommodate a couple. It charges 15,000 baht (US$429) per night during the high season (October to April) and 13,000 baht during the low season (May to September).

The definitive article
Chakrabongse Villas' Thai House is a traditional Ayutthaya-style wooden structure built on stilts. The décor mirrors that found in the Riverview Suite, while it overlooks a lush landscaped garden and pond. It costs 13,000 baht per night to stay in the Thai House during the high season, or just 10,000 baht per night during the low season.

Larger groups or families ought to consider the property's Chinese Suite, a newly-built two-story building that is modern in appearance. As well as featuring two double bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, there is also a living room and terrace where you can sunbathe in private or simply relax.

There is a swimming pool located between the Chinese Suite and the river, while there is a nice view of the Chao Phraya from the terrace on the building's upper floor. The furniture throughout the Chinese Suite is antique, the double bed in the uppermost bedroom, wood carvings and ceramics being of particular note.

A chance to explore
If you're interested in exploring a bit further than the immediate surroundings or nearby attractions, such as a visit to nearby riverside communities, for example, Chakrabongse Villas can easily organize a long-tailed boat for you at about 800 baht per hour.

Alternatively, you might want to consider dining al fresco at the property's riverside pavilion. If dining here, please note that it is imperative that you order before 1 pm.

The property also boasts its own library, as well as providing all guests with free WiFi Internet access.

Transport connections:

Train/Boat: Chakrabongse Villas is just a short walk from the pier at Tha Tien. Chao Phraya Express Boat provides boats throughout the day from 6 am until 7 pm. Unless you choose to drive, probably the easiest way is to take the BTS skytrain to Saphan Taksin station, from which you can connect via a walkway to the pier right outside the station.
