Maneeya Dhammataree

A remarkable white Mon chedi (stupa) located near Rama IV Bridge on the east bank of the Chao Phraya River in Nonthaburi province serves as a landmark for the island of Koh Kred, a historic area renowned for its pottery, and a popular destination among locals and foreign visitors to the capital.

And while the chedi is easy to spot from the nearby bridge, or from a vessel charting its way along the 'River of Kings', there's another way of enjoying this view – by booking a stay at the nearby Tip Narai Homestay.

While Tip Narai Homestay is perfectly located for those seeking to explore Koh Kred, it is actually on the opposite side of a canal that separates the island from the mainland. Brightly painted white, the building differs from other wooden structures in the neighborhood. And the accommodation itself also differs from many other homestay operations in that it is freshly decorated and features very modern facilities.

A blend of tradition, modernity

The wooden floors throughout the two-story homestay accommodation help maintain a historic feel, while this is offset by the comfort provided by its up-to-date facilities, such as an air-conditioner, a hot water supply, a refrigerator, as well as a television. The community and nearby river provide the kind of ambiance that should help you to relax and recharge your batteries.

The homestay includes five rooms, all located on the second floor and featuring the same or similar décor. All of the rooms have a view of the river and are therefore great for those who enjoy watching the sun set.

The three rooms located on the right-hand side have a particularly good view of Rama IV Bridge, while the two to the left boast a picturesque vista of Koh Kred and its remarkable chedi. If anything, the views are even more stunning at nighttime since the pretty lights alongside the river and on boats plying their way up and down the river provide an additional aesthetic appeal.

The homestay also has an area with a flat roof where you can gather with friends or other guests – this is a great spot to enjoy some DIY al fresco dining and enjoy the evening vista.

A mark of respect
Tharntip Rattanapanya, the operator of Tip Narai Homestay, says she named the homestay Narai to pay respect to King Narai the Great, who reigned during 1656-1688. The great monarch was renowned in the area due to his medicinal formulas.

There is another historical link since the area once served as a camp for troops serving King Taksin the Great, who reigned during 1768-1782. You can stroll through a market located along a narrow passageway here, or take a boat from the pier next to the market in order to cross over to Koh Kred.

Otherwise, you can ask Tharntip to organize a rowing boat with an oarsman to explore Klong Bang Bua Thong ('Bang Bua Thong Canal'), which is located about one kilometer away from the homestay. This stretch of canal features a number of historic houses, and a trip along this waterway can be a very relaxing and enjoyable experience. It's possible to stop at Somchai Thai Dessert House to sample some local desserts or learn how to make them, or you can head for a small building nearby that serves as a meditation retreat.

Hands on cooking experience
Meanwhile, the homestay itself has a local 'hands on' menu on offer, which includes somtam ('papaya salad') with coconut milk-enhanced steamed rice, pad thai ('Thai stir-fried noodles'), tom yum hed ('Sour and spicy soup with mushrooms'), and kaijiew hed ('mushroom omelet').

You can prepare authentic somtam using a pestle and mortar, or cook tom yum in a charcoal-fired earthenware pot.
