Prime Minister and Defense Minister Samak Sundaravej visited the disputed temple sites of Preah Vihear and Ta Muan Thom located along the Thai-Cambodian border on Monday. He was accompanied on his visit by Army Commander-in-Chief Gen Anupong Paojinda.

Samak visited Ta Muan Thom in the morning, boarding a helicopter afterwards to visit Thai troops stationed in Si Sa Ket province near the site of the disputed temple of Preah Vihear. Samak apparently cooked a meal for the soldiers there during his visit.

Samak's visit took place ahead of bilateral talks scheduled for Tuesday in Thailand's Prachuap Khiri Khan province between Foreign Minister Tej Bunnag and Hor Nam Hong, his Cambodian counterpart.

Cambodian officials earlier this month accused Thailand of illegally occupying the 13th century temple of Ta Muan Thom, which Cambodia also has territorial claims over.

Thailand and Cambodia were already involved in a heated debate over the location of the temple site at Preah Vihear, which the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled in 1962 belongs to Cambodia. This dispute is centered on so-called “gray areas” of land within the site of the temple ruins. The United Nations' Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (Unesco) accepted Cambodia's application for Preah Vihear to be listed as a World Heritage site in July. - Manager Online.
