Speaking on the final day of a recent ambassadorial familiarization trip to the southern provinces of Krabi, Phang-Nga, and Phuket, His Excellency Ignazio Di Pace was quoted as saying that there had been possible problems regarding discomfort, but none regarding security with regard to travel in Thailand, according to an official report from the trip.

Weerasak Kowsurat, Thailand's Minister of Tourism and Sports, said that the ministry, coordinating with private tourist business sectors from the three provinces sent out open invitations to Bangkok-based ambassadors to participate in the trip to let the diplomats see with their own eyes that the situation in these destinations is "back to normal", in the hope that the ambassadors will report back to their respective countries to repeal travel warning on their official embassy websites.

The recent political conflict in the country had led to the closure of Phuket International Airport and Krabi Airport during August 29-31. Later, a state of emergency was declared in Bangkok on September 2. In light of this situation, 24 countries had issued travel advisories warning their citizens not to travel to Thailand. Some airlines canceled direct flights to Thailand, particularly those based in China and Korea. As a result, the number of tourist arrivals in the three provinces has continued to dwindle, despite the state of emergency being lifted on September 14.

The ambassadorial fam trip, which took place during October 2-4, was the result of a recent strategy meeting participated in by the Krabi Tourist Business Association, Phang-Nga Tourist Business Association, Phuket Tourist Association, and the Thai Hotels Association Southern Chapter. - ThaiAsiaToday.com.
