Tourists 'adjusting' to new realities
The rising cost of living amid higher oil prices has had an effect on both local and foreign tourists' travel plans, according to Anoma Wongyai, assistant director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT)'s Phuket office.
Anoma said it was likely that a greater number of tourists from Southeast Asia, South Asia, and the South Pacific would visit Thailand since higher oil prices meant that they were more likely to visit destinations closer to home.
These factors had not had much of an effect on foreign tourists, she said, although it was clear that local tourists were traveling less and also spending less during their trips. Local tourists were also reducing their accommodation budgets since the cost of air tickets has been rising in line with the price of oil, she said. - Manager Online.
