According to the Sport Climbing Association of Thailand (Scat)’s Chanchet Kittisophon, rock climbing is not only great fun, but also a terrific way of getting or keeping fit.

“This challenging sport teaches people to concentrate and make the correct preparations,” he said. “The problem is a lot of people don’t believe they can rise to the challenge before actually trying to do it. But if you show your courage, rock climbing can be great fun for both men and women.”

Scat currently manages a 15-meter high artificial climbing wall located at Rajamangala National Stadium, which was built by utilizing funds from a budget for the Asian Indoor Games in 2005, and remains popular among members of the community.

“We think the investment will be worthwhile over the long-term. Seeing the demand among the public makes me believe it’s worth every baht,” Chanchet said.

One side of the two-sided surface is for speed climbing. It features large modular hand holds not spread too far apart, and so can be attempted by confident beginners, or more experienced climbers at greater speed. The other side of the wall is definitely more challenging, its fiberglass structure an import from France.

Be brave!
Chanchet said that while most people are familiar with popular mass sports, such as football (soccer), hardly anyone has tried rock climbing. “The only thing you need to prepare are your mind and body,” he said.

Located at Rajamangala National Stadium on Ramkamhaeng Road, Scat’s artificial climbing wall opens during 8 am-6 pm daily. For further information, please call Tel: + 66 (0)2 434 6100 or +66 (0)2 433 6417-8.
