Youthapong Charoenpan

Three of the most important factors among younger shoppers when deciding on a visit to a night market are: location; variety (of goods on offer); and whether or not the goods on offer are suitably fashionable or not.

Major Cineplex Ratchayothin Night Market is certainly convenient, its central location near both Phaholyothin Road and Ratchadapisek Road being ideal for city residents. It’s also just a 20-minute walk from Central Plaza Lat Phrao.

The market also ticks the ‘variety’ box – here you’ll find over 100 outlets, hawking a wide range of items, such as men’s and women’s clothing, shoes, ornaments, CDs, DVDs, as well as numerous snacks.

In terms of its ‘street cred’, I’d say the market is fashionable in its own unique way. It’s certainly trendy among many of the country’s movie stars, who you may be lucky enough to catch during a visit.

‘Ladies night’
Most of the stalls selling fashionable attire tend to focus on women shoppers. And what motivates women to purchase a new outfit? Personally, I get the feeling that most women end up buying a new outfit because they think, “I haven’t got anything to wear!” In real terms, this means, “I haven’t got anything to wear for this particular occasion, which is subtly different from all other occasions”. The Major Ratchayothin Night Market responds perfectly to such female desires, boasting a wide range women’s clothing for sale.

Since women are more likely to be shopping than men, most night markets tend to focus on women shoppers, who’ll most likely be accompanied by a friend, partner, or group of friends.

And it’s certainly not unusual to spot a celebrity or two when visiting this market. Indeed, there’s even an alley called Soi Dara, meaning the “small street of superstars”.

The price is right
Bargaining is rather like a game, don’t you think? But the final result is rarely ideal for both sides – rather, it’s a form of compromise whereby eventually both the buyer and seller are reasonably satisfied.

It’s possible to bargain at Major Cineplex Ratchayothin Night Market, but the opportunities to do so may be fewer than at Chatuchak Weekend Market (JJ Market). Nevertheless, young shoppers may find they waste less time at this night market since most of the products on offer are aimed at the rapidly-changing, trend-driven tastes of college and university students.

The market is ideal for students from Saint John’s College of Commerce, Kasetsart University, and Rajabhat Chankasem University, which are located just less than one kilometer from the site.

Six strips of stalls make this a convenient place to shop and just the right size. In contrast, many shoppers these days complain that JJ Market, with its huge, labyrinth-like format, can be rather confusing in terms of getting around.

Since a new phase of the Major Cineplex Ratchayothin is currently under construction, it’s quite possible that the night market could get even busier, particularly once the construction work has been completed over the next few weeks. You can plan your visit with this in mind, based on your own preferences.

Major Cineplex Ratchayothin Night Market opens daily except Monday during 6-10 pm.
