Short pants have become an increasingly popular item among young women this summer, fast replacing skinny-fit jeans in the popularity stakes.
The emergence of new styles, new colors and new fabrics, has certainly played a key role in enhancing the popularity of these garments.
Short? How short?
Short pants? Very short? Absolutely! And the latest short pants to woo women aren't the old-fashioned sportswear type – rather, they're all sorts of new (and outrageous) varieties, frequently cut shorter, tighter and altogether skimpier than anything women in the late 1960s and early 1970s would dare try and squeeze into.
The idea to write about 'Hot Pants' came up after I spotted a beautiful young lady wearing a pair of wide-legged ultra short pants along with a tailored jacket and a fedora. The look was just so stylishly sexy. And while the monsoon rains seem to be making an earlier appearance this year, it seems that there is still enough of the summer left to enjoy a few more weeks of these nice short pants.
Fit for all figures
When it comes to short pants, it should be noted that the cuts available these days vary greatly – from ultra tight right through to 'wide leg' versions. Whichever form takes your fancy, they certainly seem to be in vogue right now.
If you're a 'larger' lady, you may think that the trend for short pants might not be suitable for your form. The good news is you can opt for a wide-legged variety and still look fabulous. It may sound hard to believe, but the wide-legged short pants have a higher waist, which adds height to your form and can actually make you appear slimmer.
A pair of short pants with a high waist in a darker
color can be flattering on just about any body type. If you are on the
short side, choose a tight pair of short pants rather than the big,
billowy wide-legged variety that only seem to look good on supermodel
types.
Carrying a little too much weight around the hips? The low-waist short pants can help balance out your shape.
Another key to looking chic in wide-legged short pants is to wear them
with a body hugging top since you want to keep the top sleek and
simple. You certainly won't want to make the look too 'busy' by wearing
a billowy top, particularly if you're on the short side.
Short pants can look sexy with heels too. Choose a slightly chunkier
shoe or boot with a two- to three-inch heel rather than flats if you
really want to step out in style. Wearing short pants is all about
confidence, so try not to worry too much about wearing them even though
you may think others have more attractive legs and calves than your own.
Across the spectrum
One of the most important aspects to consider when purchasing short pants is the color.
While black is still the most popular color, many women are experimenting with more varied hues.
Bright, feminine colors are really popular at the moment and white – as a form of fashion statement – is also in demand.
These days, women tend to seek out some
individuality when selecting garments. If you're having a hard time
abandoning your slim-friendly basic black behind, bear in mind that
side panels are a popular
new development that has become quite trendy. For example, pin-striped
navy blue short pants aren't only fashionable, the pin stripes also
break up the color and can seem to make you appear slimmer since they
draw the eye inwards.
Age no barrier
After spotting a photo recently in an international glossy magazine of
the 63-year-old Oscar-winning, British actress Helen Mirren in a bikini
on a beach last summer, I feel it would be unfair to make 25 the cut
off point for high hemlines. I believe that, so long as your body and
spirit are holding up, you should be willing to make a splash. It's all
a question of confidence really, isn't it?
Kuntinee, a ravishing 20-something marketing executive, is busy planning ahead for her night on the town on Friday.
“I want to turn up to my favorite club in a black tailored jacket with a pair of short pants, together with my favorite pair of killer high heels,” she says.
Hot pants have now become a pretty much 'run of the disco' affair, but
Kuntinee says they are ideal for dancing since you “don't have to
remember to keep your knees together”.
While short pants are arguably
a real temptation to men, you can also consider them to be a form of
attire that helps women in some ways. At least it means they don't have
to worry too much about how they sit or about walking upstairs without
someone going 'Wow!'
