Sa-Bai-Jai: The perfect place for doggy's paddle
Staff Writer
While swimming is clearly a very popular and healthy pastime among a large number of Bangkok residents, dogs lucky enough to be looked after by caring and affluent owners can now also enjoy a nice, refreshing swim in order to cope off with the soaring tropical heat.
Several entrepreneurs think this could prove to be a lucrative market, so quite a few specialist 'pools for dogs' outlets are cropping up around the city. We decided to take a look at one such facility - Sa-Bai-Jai – which is located on Soi Jamjuri off Ram Indra Road.
Sa bai jai literally means 'happy and relaxing'. Sa also means pool, so this complex aims to live up to its name - a happy and relaxing pool. As well as featuring an impressive pool area, the complex features pleasant accommodation, along with its own 'dog spa'.
Sa-Bai-Jai was launched in March by a group of close friends, who are all dog lovers. Vorayuth Wongsawad, who owns a share in Sa-Bai-Jai, said the idea emerged while the group of friends were chatting on the website http://www.mylovegolden.net.
Sa-Bai-Jai's operator is targeting larger dogs, such as Golden Retrievers, Labradors, or Alsatians, since they need more exercise than the smaller animals. Instead of heading out personally to exercise their pet, more and more people are opting to visit place like Sa-Bai-Jai.
Not a speck in sight
Sa-Bai-Jai has played a significant role in ensuring visitors to Bangkok have a safe and pleasant visit. Over four million baht (US$120,000) has been spent on this aspect alone, according to Vorayuth. “I hope we can become the biggest and best swimming pool for dogs,” he said.
Measuring six by 10 square wah (40 sq m), Sa-Bai-Jai also has a pleasant path surrounding it, from which the dogs can jump into the pool. Owners have to pay between 350-550 baht ($10.50-16.45) per hour, depending on the size of the dog. This includes a proper bath and blow dry once your dog has completed his or her session in the pool.
The complex includes some special air-conditioned rooms to accommodate the dogs, for which it charges anything from 400-800 baht per night, depending on the size of the dog. The complex also charges an additional 50 baht per dog, per meal, although it's also possible for owners to feed their pets themselves, if they prefer.

Vorayuth says Sa-Bai-Jai mostly promotes its services via the Internet and by word of mouth.
He said Sa-Bai-Jai categorizes customers into two groups. The first groups take their dogs to Sa-Bai-Jai for exercise, while the second group seeks physical treatments. He said Sa-Bai-Jai charge the second group less than the first since the dogs are in more urgent need of regular exercise to relieve their health problems.

Vorayuth explains that it was never the objective to make a huge amount of money from Sa-Bai-Jai, which is just as well since it is likely to take more than 10 years before the founders receive their return on investment in full.
Vorayuth says the founders “just want the dogs to be happy” while exercising. Most owners, it seems, tend to agree with him.
