Maneeya Dhammataree
Although its official name is Adhere the 13th Blues Bar, this cozy ‘live’ music venue located just a 500-meter walk from Khao Sarn Road is better known among its regular patrons as the Blues Bar.

Labels can often be somewhat misleading, and the venue’s full name isn’t really meant to be as complicated as it may sound. In short, it’s meant to endear people to hang out at a pleasant venue offering nightly ‘live’ blues, jazz, and other styles of music. The number 13 simply refers to the venue’s official address.
Homely feel
In some ways, this place might remind you of home since it takes up an area of just 12 sq m. Parties are regularly organized for regulars and friends.
There’s a tiny area reserved for the musicians or band along one long wall. A narrow walkway is the only thing separating the musicians from the audience. Even that area can easily get filled up with people who just have to move their feet to the beat!
You could say that the Blues Bar proves that you don’t need a huge space in which to have fun at a ‘live’ music venue, so long as you can relax, dance, socialize and have a drink with friends.

The ‘live’ music action starts earlier at Blues Bar than a lot of other Bangkok music venues. At about 8.30 pm, Total Band began with covers of songs by the Beatles and the Carpenters. Lots of people were keen to enjoy the show and join in the fun during my recent visit. In fact, it seemed like a lot of people just couldn’t sit still once the music got underway.
At about 10 pm, Georgia’s Blues Band, the in-house band fronted by female songstress Georgia, gets down to business. Georgia has a really powerful, professional-sounding voice. Several other bands perform from Tuesday through Sunday, while Monday night is jazz night.
You might find it surprising to learn that the operators of Blues Bar don’t wish its guest musicians to be “easily categorized”. The bar doesn’t define itself by a particular music genre despite its name. In the main, it focuses on the blues “with various accents”.

Holy smoke!
While smoking has long been banned inside the bar, I noticed a number of chairs that had been placed outside for smokers. And if you just have to inhale, why not try something different, such as a Hookah (Arabic water pipe) of dried fruits, which is supposed to be a bit cooler than smoking regular tobacco products, such as cigarettes and cigars. A pipe is located just outside the bar.
The Blues Bar is probably best known for its friendliness and this is at least partly due to its good location. Since there’s little space inside the bar, you’ll find it easy to enjoy yourself as you’ll find yourself becoming more or less “coerced” into having fun and being sociable with those who share your valuable space.
You may even find that you’re asked to hang on to a chair for someone in need of a smoke outdoors. Even when you queue for the restroom at the Blues Bar, you might find you’ve quickly struck up a friendship.
Pet lovers may also find Blues Bar an interesting spot since it boasts a significant number of chubby cats. They’re usually found curling up somewhere on the premises. And if they’re not already asleep, be prepared, since one of them might decide to make a home on your lap. After all, like the audience, they’ve found that Blues Bar makes an ideal “home from home”.

Transport connections:
Boat: Chao Phraya express boats serving piers along the river can easily get you to Phra Arthit pier. Adhere the 13th Blues Bar is about one kilometer away on foot.
Bus: If you don’t fancy a walk, you can always hop on (regular, non air-con) bus numbers 32 or 33.
