Dutch talent Laidback Luke (Luke Van Scheppingen) began producing electronic dance music in the early 1990s, and started deejaying in the mid-1990s; he has since risen to become one of the most prolific house producers of the day.

Luke has produced an astonishing amount of tracks over the past decade, including a mega-successful mix album titled
Windmill Skill (2003), plus a chart-topping Dance Valley anthem, We Can Not Get Enough (2003)
, which has been picked up by industry heavyweights Carl Cox and Roger Sanchez.

James Vernon recently caught up with Luke before his Bangkok deejay debut at Bed Supperclub to learn more about the young, laidback, and extremely talented deejay and house-producing family man.

James Vernon (JV): How would you describe your deejay style?

Laidback Luke (LL): 'House' would be the best word – I play tracks that have influences from different electronic dance music genres, and I like to make everything into one 'blend'. When I first started producing tracks in the early 1990s, [electronic dance music] was largely called 'house', so that's what I still go with.

JV: You've gained a good deal of recognition over the years. How do you think this has come about?

LL: Well, this has been many years in the making. Over the last 10 years I've been working really hard on my music and deejaying. I'd say the success of my track Be (2007), which became a huge Summer hit, was the definite turning point – things really took off after that.

I've also done a ton of remixes through the years, which have been played around the world by many well-respected deejays. And of course the support from Roger Sanchez and the Swedish House Mafia has really helped as well.

JV: Which clubs are your favorites when it comes to deejaying, and what's your favorite part of the world when it comes to the crowds?

LL: My favorite club to play would definitely be Mixx in Paris, and I also really enjoy Pacha on Ibiza.

In terms of locales, lately the Portugal crowd has been fun to play for, and of course UK crowds are always fun.

JV: What's in store in the future for Laidback Luke?

LL: Well right now I'm really enjoying my international 'debut'. I've played the piano since I was young and I've been writing music and song lyrics for quite some time now, so I'd like to pursue that more seriously some time.

Some of my upcoming tracks and remixes will feature more vocalists and singer/songwriters, which I'm excited about.

JV: Any tips for up-and-coming deejays or producers?

LL: Budding deejays and producers should definitely check out my website forum. I post there everyday and try to help out with tips and advice for beginners and more experienced deejays and producers - try to help them get to their next level.

And also, set goals and pursue them 100% - no matter what, don't give up. Keep at it and good things will come. About seven or eight times things just went completely wrong for me, but I kept at it. So don't give up!

JV: I was pleasantly surprised to find out that at 31, in addition to being a dedicated deejay and producer, you're also a dedicated family man.

LL: That's right. I've been together with my wife for about 16 years, and we've been married for eight. We have two kids, aged seven and five. They're not so much into the music thing, but I think sometimes they enjoy telling their friends that their dad deejays!

I'm never away from home for more than a week when touring - they balance each other out nicely, the deejay/producer and family life.

JV: Where will you be on tour for the rest of 2008?

LL: I'll be going to a lot of places this year and into January of next year: Brazil, Canada, the US, and throughout Europe.

JV: Sounds good. Thanks for your time - wishing you all the best in your music, and family life.

LL: Sure. Thank you.
