Lots of live sports at
Duke’s Pub
Staff Writer
Over recent weeks, there have been some thoroughly enjoyable sporting moments to savor in rugby (Wales the triumphant Six Nations team), cricket (England defeating New Zealand), and football (soccer), such as all the latest Champions League action.
The Duke of Wellington has several TV screens handily located throughout the pub so customers can keep up with the latest sporting events. There are also several quieter spots for those seeking a little more privacy.
Pub food 101: Grade the grub
The food I sampled at the Duke of Wellington was excellent. The three Bangers (sausages) in the Bangers and Mash (300 baht) were succulent, and were accompanied by some crispy green beans and carrots. The mashed potatoes and gravy with onions were tasty, and the portions extremely generous.
Since I had read in a friend’s email recently that accompanying meals with hot drinks might be much better for digestion (of fatty matter) than cold drinks, I decided to order a pot of tea (60 baht) with my meal.
I will certainly pop back, though, because pub director Matthew Smith explained that the pub’s wide range of drinks are well worth savoring, particularly the beers. Should I order a cider (220 baht [a pint] or 140 baht [a half pint]) or perhaps allow myself a couple of healthful glasses of wine (99 baht per glass during Happy Hours) I wonder?
‘The pub’s not dead!’
Pubs are certainly changing and having to adapt to new legal challenges. I have tended to avoid pubs since giving up smoking cigarettes, but now they are devoid of smokers, they tend to feel somewhat more homely.
The Duke of Wellington has an outdoor area at the front of the property where smokers can take a little refuge. The pub does impose the new regulations regarding smoking, but if you are seeking a smoke-free environment with the option for a sneak outside (for a puff!), the ‘Duke’ might be just ideal.

Train: The Duke of Wellington can be found in the United Center Building across the road from Patpong. It is roughly equidistant from BTS skytrain stations Sala Daeng and Chong Nonsri. It’s a slightly longer walk to MRT subway station Si Lom, just beyond BTS Sala Daeng.
