for vodka fans at Pattaya's coolest new venue

In a party town like Pattaya, I guess it shouldn’t be much of a surprise to find an outdoor movie theater overlooking the beach – namely, the Porch at Central Festival Pattaya Beach shopping center. And what’s even funkier is that you can get a shot of vodka in a bar nearby where the temperature is maintained at sub zero (-5ºC) levels. Since opening last year, the -5 Ice Bar has attracted lots of customers, and it is particularly popular among expatriates. In fact, the bar currently offers ‘all you can drink’ vodka rounds for 500 baht (US$14.70), per person for a 25-minute session. Between 6-8 pm, you can enjoy the same deal for only 300 baht per person as a form of ‘happy hours’ special. The bar currently has enough space to accommodate up to 30 people, while it is considering a refurbishment project that would lift the limit to 40.
While I arrived during the daily Happy Hours period, I always try to bear in mind that too much alcohol can ruin the taste of a drink. I also know there is a limit to how much booze an individual can comfortably drink. On this occasion, however, I managed to sink four shots within the allotted time period.
DIY special
To reiterate my fetish for vodka, let me share this little formula with
you, revealed to me by a bar tending friend, which is something you can
prepare easily at home for a gathering or party.
Begin by flavoring your vodka (any reasonable brand) in advance. Try to do it as many days in advance of the party as possible.
In this recipe, bruise two stalks of lemon grass gently with a rolling
pin and place them in a nearly full bottle of vodka, along with some
gomme (sugar syrup), and a red chili pricked heavily with a fork. Screw
the lid back on, shake gently, then leave the bottle for a week or so
to let the flavors combine, shaking it whenever you can remember. When
it’s party time, just add ice and serve in martini glasses. Believe me,
this drink is close to heaven.
Back to the bar. The music was, in my opinion, just kind of ‘familiar’
R&B billboard chart songs mixed with danceable pop songs. And when
it comes to dress code, there's not much room for individual glamor
since the bar provides each customer with an Eskimo jacket. Wear
particularly strong make up if you want to stand out, or just bring
along a hearty laugh and enjoy the fun.
With only 15 minutes remaining to enjoy a dance, I swung my hips,
shooting both arms up in the air, wearing the rather bulky Eskimo coat
while trying to achieve my best smoldering eyes and youthful pout,
comfortable in the knowledge that the sea and a warmer setting are just
a a short stroll away.
