Saitharn Putharugsa, a graduate of Silpakorn University's Faculty of Interior Decoration, heads the design team at furniture manufacturer Ong-Orn.

The company name is a tribute to Saitharn's beloved mother - Ong-Orn Metharom - herself a graduate from Silpakorn University's Faculty of Decorative Arts.

The designs generated by Ong-Orn manage to find a balance between creativity and delivering on what is currently popular, each item also coming with a one-year guarantee.

Ong-Orn produces a wide range of contemporary furniture, including custom designed items. Among the items it produces are barstools, beds, benches, cabinets, chaise longue, chests of drawers, contemporary daybeds, custom sofas, desks, dining tables, headboards, lounge chairs, sideboards, stools, tables and wardrobes. Prices range from 9,000-70,000 baht (US$260-2,027).

Saitharn says the Ong-Orn brand represents the production of finely crafted contemporary furniture, inspired by Asian features blended with a modern touch. The company produces goods for architects, individual customers, importers, interior designers, as well as retailers.

“Our management team, led by Tawan Tanwatcharaphan [Saitharn's elder brother], has decades of experience in exporting. We have developed a strong network with our clients in Europe, as well as Dubai [in the United Arab Emirates] and we pride ourselves on working with shipping companies in the area of quality control, ensuring goods are shipped promptly and efficiently,” Saitharn says.

Competitive prices
Tawan says the company's products offer excellent value.

“We manufacture contemporary furniture and decorative items, mainly in teak or rosewood. Due to the availability of quality raw materials locally and the skilled craftsmanship of our workforce, our prices tend to be consistently lower than our competitors when you compare the materials, quality and finish,” he says.

As well as serving Asian markets [predominantly Malaysia and Taiwan] and the Middle East [particularly UAE], our other main export markets are Germany and South Africa.”

And in the domestic market, Ong-Orn has also become a favorite place to browse among some politicians and aristocrats due to its competitive prices and quality, which easily matches items produced for export.

Saitharn and her team of designers possess a real passion for design and the kind of high standards required to produce the level of meticulous craftsmanship found in Ong-Orn's furniture products.

Responding to feedback
Saitharn points out that as well as paying close attention to the standard of work produced, the company's team also listens closely to what customers have to say.

“We can't deny that we have tended to be a 'made-to-order' producer up until now, but we have continued to listen to what our customers have to say and learned a lot from visitors to our showroom in Central Plaza Chaengwattana in order to gage which products generate most interest,” Saitharn says.

“In many cases we offer products that are 'signature' items, such as a carved wooden upholstered sofa with Lai Kanok [a traditional form of Thai pattern] features, designed by my mother [Ong-Orn Metharom]. Our designers work directly with clients to create unique products to satisfy the customers' needs. The designs we produce are classic and have been created to outlive trends. In that sense they are truly 'tried and tested' when it comes to quality and style.”

In order to really get what you're looking for in terms of selection and availability, as well as value, customers are urged to order items up to four months ahead of the required pick up or delivery date.

Style and substance
“Apart from the regular designs we use, we often tend to go for beige and off white since we believe they are 'classic' colors that extend beyond mere fashion,” Saitharn says.

Saitharn says that some domestic furniture manufacturers tend to develop designs based upon colors or styles that are currently fashionable, but this means that they lack any kind of truly unique identity. Saitharn says the company has a deep-seated sense of value.

“Our [business] goal is to provide our clients with the best possible quality of furniture, comprising a blend of made-to-order and our contemporary designs at the best possible prices,” she says.

Saitharn says that she would like to see the market for furniture exports become more competitive, while urging rival domestic producers to “stop copying” and instead generate their own innovative designs to provide a strong sense of competition.

“On our home page [http://www.ong-orn.com ], you will see just a sample of our collection. We would like to invite you to explore the various product categories and discover the quality and imaginative furniture designs that we're so proud of,” Saitharn says.
