David Mayer, founder of uber-chic design team Whitespace and the Whitespace Gallery, says he had always wanted to become an architect from an early age after being inspired by the design characteristics of the Fitchburg Library in Massachusetts, his home state.

Established in 2004, Whitespace is a team of architects, interior designers, and product and communications designers, whose members collaborate to produce extraordinary buildings, products and spaces from Bangkok to Shanghai and right across the United States.
Retail design forte
Mayer says the majority of the company’s work has tended to be in the area of retail store design. The company recently completed work on eight of 30 official Apple outlets nationwide.
“We’re now in the process of working with a trendy new [hair] salon called ‘Off World’, which is located in Chamchuri Square,” Mayer says. “We can’t wait to show off the [interior design] work we produced for the salon. The ribbon-cutting ceremony should take place before the end of the year.”
Whitespace has produced some remarkable designs for retail spaces and hotels in Hangzhou, a city located in China's Zhejiang province, while closer to home, the company has provided design inspiration for branches of Chalachol Hair Salons. The J&B Cosmetic Headquarters in Bangkok’s Pratunam acts as another excellent showpiece for the company's design work.

A confident outlook
Mayer says that he has seen no evidence so far to suggest that the global financial and economic downturn has had any effect on the business environment in Thailand, although he points out that he monitors the situation carefully on a regular basis.

The architect believes that his background has provided him with a
broader view. insisting that Whitespace should be able to remain
unaffected by any impact resulting from the financial and economic
challenges taking place outside the country. He says he remains
positive in terms of the public's understanding of the economic
challenges that lie ahead, pointing out that his relatively small team
is extremely productive.
The field of architecture is always particularly competitive, Mayer
explains, adding that the situation in Thailand was no different. He
says that he had been pleasantly surprises and impressed by the Thai
people, who are quite open-minded when it comes to architecture. While
the country has its own history and influences in terms of
architecture, Mayer says Thai people seem particularly open to adopting
edgy or trendy forms of design.
Mayer's personal favorite when it comes to local architecture is Wat
Arun ('The Temple of Dawn') since he says he can really appreciate the
harmony and teamwork required in creating the impressive colorful
mosaics that cover the huge structure.
He related this to the success of Whitespace, pointing out that each
member of his 20-strong team was valuable, adding that his allocation
of “the right person to the right job” was a major reason for the
company's advancement.
